CPO 'Dusty' Miller: The 1964 Mediterranean Cruise

Dusty Miller was one of the grand characters of the Portsmouth Branch. In his memoirs recorded before his passing, he recalled the sweltering heat of the engine room on HMS Alliance during the 1964 Mediterranean deployment. With diesel engines running hard and seawater temperatures hitting eighty degrees, the engine room was over 120°F. The crew worked in shorts and boots, cooling down with buckets of salt water hauled from the casing. His stories captured the raw, authentic grit of Britain's 'A-Class' diesel submarine force.
